lunch at 'The Press'

Yesterday we spent the day at Oxford University Press, which is quite impressive. OUP or 'The Press', is the largest university press in the world, employing 27,000 workers worldwide and 1,500 in this building alone.

It began printing books here in 1586.... we still can't believe that they want to publish Philip's book-- don't they know he is from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania? One interesting fact we read was that the first book published by the American office of OUP was the Scofield Reference Bible in 1909.

Philip spent the morning meeting with his editors, going over figures, indexing, and the glossary and reinforcing the timeline for the summer's final editorial work before the book is sent to India in the fall for printing.

Deb joined the group for lunch in one of their stately private dining rooms, as did two of the other members of his production team. Philip is amazed that he has a production team -- he barely made the baseball team! The dining room was once part of the house where the printer lived in 1830, but had been recently refurbished. It looked like something out of a museum set, as you may be able to tell from the picture. All in all, it was something of a surreal day.

The clattering of the mail slot in our door just startled us-- we were surprised to pull out an anniversary card from Shelly & Don... tomorrow is our 29th anniversary.
